Fishing Report August 2017

August 20-31, 2017

Water temperatures have gradually dropped down to 70 degrees, but the walleyes are still quite scattered and deeper than usual.  We are still not catching a lot of walleyes each day, but the ones we get seem to be pretty nice ones.  The weather has been mild so water temperatures should continue to drop and the good fall walleye bite should ramp up over the next couple weeks.  I am hoping to see a more aggressive bite over the Labor Day weekend.

FYI Guide Service Clients - I will be on a remote wilderness fishing trip up in Voyagers National Park from 9/6 thru 9/14 or 9/15, depending upon the weather.  I may not have access to either phone or email during this time, but please leave me messages anyway, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

August 14-19, 2017

Walleye fishing remains comparatively slow, as is typical for mid-August, but we generally catch a few fish most days.  The fish are quite scattered so we are fishing many different locations each day.  I am now seeing walleyes holding in deeper water with most in the 20-22 foot range and some as deep as 26 feet.  The weather has been mild for August and the water temperature still hangs in the 72-73 degree range.  We are still seeing big smallmouth on the rock piles, but the trophy bluegills were not there this week.

August 1-6, 2017

Water temperatures have dropped down slightly to the 73 degree mark and we may have already seen the warmest water temperatures for the summer.  The walleye bite has picked up as well, specifically early in the day on the rocks.  The deep rock structures have been the best locations with walleyes holding in the 18-20 feet deep range and the big bluegills generally sitting a little shallower.  Northern pike and smallmouth are still biting well in their typical haunts.  We are fishing leeches on live bait rigs primarily, but we will also pull crankbaits or blades if we are having difficulty locating pods of walleyes.
