Fishing Report September 2017

September 27 -30, 2017

We have had a strong cold front that slowed the walleye fishing a bit, and made for some chilly morning boat rides, but we were still catching very nice fish every day in the cold.  We have boated a 26" walleye each of the last two days, plus a number of fish in the 17-19 inch slot daily.  Generally speaking, if the weather is fishable, then you will find plenty of walleyes.  The leaf colors are really beginning to turn now and the lakeshore is just beautiful.  The adult loons all headed south a few weeks ago, and now the young loons are calling every night, wondering where everybody has gone.  The young ones will eventually figure it out and migrate south in late October or early November.

September 21-26, 2017

The good traditional fall walleye bite has finally begun on Woman Lake, now that the water temperatures have dropped to 65 degrees and the weather has been cooperating.  We are finding walleyes bunched up on the 17-24 foot sand breaklines on main lake structures (reefs and points) that have immediate access to deep water.  We are still fishing leeches, but we are also catching fish on vertical jigging baits when we find the fish in the 20 foot plus depths.  I expect this bite to continue through the first couple weeks of October.

Our fishing trip to Voyagers National Park was quite successful as we experienced great weather and outstanding walleye and smallmouth bass fishing.  The top water fishing for smallmouths was remarkable with numerous fish in the 20-21 inch range, and dozens of 17-19 inchers.  Check out the Catch Photos section of this website to see what you are missing.  If you get the chance, go up there and see it for yourself.  You won't be disappointed.

September 1-5, 2017

The walleyes have not moved out of their late summer scattered locations into their traditional fall patterns, as yet, but it should happen very soon.  Water temperatures have dipped into the 68-69 degree range now and we catching a few real nice ones again, but not any large quantities.  The walleyes we are finding are still relatively deep (22-26 feet) mostly on steeper main lake structure breaks.
