Fishing Report July 2022

We enjoyed a typical busy holiday weekend over the Fourth of July holiday on Woman Lake, with nice fishable weather for much of it.  We experienced our fourth big mayfly hatch, but it did not seem to affect the walleye bite, as the walleyes remain active in 15-18 feet of water, and are readily taking leeches.  Many of the walleyes are now staged on typical summertime main lake basin structure including sunken islands, reefs, bars, and rock piles.  We now are also finding some bigger smallmouth bass on the same structure as the walleyes, just a little bit more shallow.  The loon chicks are finally hatching, so keep an eye out for them as you are boating around.  

Guide Service Notice:

I will be taking a break from guiding for a number of weeks, beginning July 8th, for some lower back surgery, to hopefully resolve a long standing back pain issue.  Doctors say the surgery recovery time can vary from 6-10 weeks, but if all goes well I hope to be back fishing and guiding by mid-September, in time for the hot fall walleye bite.  I would like to thank all of you who have fished with me so far this season.  We enjoyed a much better than expected walleye opening week, followed by a stretch of bad weather in late May, and then excellent walleye fishing throughout the month of June.  With the late start to the fishing season, due to the late ice out, and cooler than normal water temperatures, we may see this good walleye bite continue well into July this year.  Thanks again, and hope to see you in September.
