Fishing Report Sept / Oct 2014

October 3-5, 2014

The fall colors are stunning on Woman Lake right now, and the fishing remains very good. The cold and strong winds this week made fishing somewhat of a challenge, but the walleyes were willing to cooperate if you could tough out the weather. Walleye fishing should continue to be strong at least up through the end of October, and if the weather permits, well into November as well. This is probably the end of the season for me, as the ducks are now flying and my Brittany Spaniel is anxious to chase some pheasants and grouse. However, I expect to be out on the ice sometime in early December, so good luck to all of you until then.

September 25 - 30, 2014

The walleye bite has been steady all September, but the action seemed to get even better over the past week. We caught numerous fish of all sizes up to 24 inches, and kept a few nice batches of 15-18 inchers for a couple shore lunches. There seemed to be no shortage of active fish, particularly on under water points adjacent to the main lake basin. The active fish seemed to be holding a little deeper than earlier in the month. Water temperatures have dropped to the mid 50 degree range, depending upon the skycover each day, and the weather has been delightful. This was maybe the best bite we have had since mid-July. September 19 - 21, 2014

The variety of structure south of Government Point and the big breaks off the Center Bar were consistent bets for walleyes this weekend. We found lots of smaller walleyes in the 14 - 17 inch range, as well as many 2 and 3 year old throwbacks. The large number of 10 - 14 inch fish we released is testament to the health of the up and coming year classes of keeping size fish. Based upon what I have seen, Woman Lake will produce nice stingers of eating size walleyes for the next few years.

September 12 - 14, 2014

The waters of Woman Lake remain seasonally warm and calm, and the fishing has been very solid. Water temperatures have gradually dropped into the mid to lower 60 degree range, and the walleyes seem to be scattered all over the main basin structures. Almost every structure we have fished is holding walleyes, and many are still holding bass near the tops of the breaks. The bars and troughs between the island and Government Point, and all the way west to Stoney Point have been best lately. Most of the active fish have been in the 16 -18 foot depths, but we've caught fish both deeper and shallower.
