Fishing Report July 2015

July 24 - July 27, 2015

The summer heat is upon us and it is great to be near the water.  The hot temperatures seem to have slowed the walleye fishing a bit, particularly on days with little wind.  However the smallmouth bass and trophy bluegill bite is quite strong.  Look for rock piles in the 11-14 foot depths or any rocky bottom structure that has nearby access to deeper water and you will find them.  The big bull bluegills in Woman Lake are truly impressive.  The smallmouth bass are even more impressive, and so much fun to catch.  No other freshwater fish puts up a fight like a big smally.  Did you know the DNR caught a smallmouth bass (in a trap net) on Woman Lake that weighed more than the current state record?  Yes, they get that big here.  We are catching enough walleyes or dinner, but the hot bite we have seen since May has slowed, probably until the temperatures begin to moderate a little.

July 1 - July 5, 2015    Fourth of July Week

The good weather and good fishing have continued on Woman Lake.  The walleyes are staged and ready to bite on many of the primary main lake structures and the big smallmouth bass have begun to show up on their summer rock piles.  Water temperatures have reached the 73-74 degree range and the lake is now quite comfortable for swimming, skiing, wakeboarding, and the like.  We found many walleyes 13-15 feet deep (shallower than expected) off sand breaks from sunken islands and main lake reefs.  The smallmouth bass we found were at similar depths over rock structures that have close access to deep water.  "Summer is hot, and the fishing is easy", just as the song goes.
